Food trucks are a big thing in Hawaii. I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing or if it's just due to the fact that owning a piece of real estate for your business (or home or anything else) is outrageously priced.

I've eaten out of food trucks before. But I've never seen as many as I have here. And I've never seen any truck as popular as Giovanni's Shrimp Truck. Their shrimp plates are "famous" around here and I hear they have even been featured on some food shows. The truck definitely looks sketchy, but I'm all about trying new food. Even if it comes out of a sketchy truck on the side of the road.

You can see the crowds of people in the pictures above. All kinds of people were there - locals and tourists from around the world. We waited about 30 minutes to finally receive our orders. I'll be honest and say that I wasn't blown away. Don't get me wrong, the food was yummy. It just wasn't anything extraordinary. I ordered the shrimp scampi plate, pictured above. The shrimp were pretty big, cooked perfectly in butter and tons of garlic (I love garlic!), and served with scoops of white rice (EVERYTHING is served with rice here in Hawaii). They also serve a spicy shrimp dish which I hear is insanely spicy. On the menu it states "NO REFUNDS" next to the spicy dish. Ha! I guess some people don't know what they're getting themselves into when they order.

There are little shops, or booths, set up around the truck. I'm sure they feed off of the business that Giovanni's gets. One of the shops is another food truck that serves smoothies, shave ice, and ice cold coconuts! I ordered a cold coconut, drank the juice directly out of it, and then the guys from the truck were kind enough to cut up the coconut for us afterwards. It was the perfect drink and dessert to match up with our shrimp plates. They also sell funnel cakes (my favorite!) next door but sadly, I was way too full to order one.

If you're in the area, you have to stop by! If not for the shrimp, just for the experience!

  5. I love food trucks and there is quite a movement here in denver for them. This one is so graphic and eye-catching. Too bad the shrimp were not the best you ever had. I loved reading about it though!

  7. There's just something so "authentic" feeling about eating out of a food truck, to me. I don't know why ... I guess maybe because around where we are, some of the best Mexican food is served out of trucks on the side of the road! Usually by migrant family members looking to help support themselves and their community while they are in the area! [And I'm all about supporting small business!] But the cold coconut? That sounds intriguing!

  9. This made me think of the guy from Hawaii Five-0 who has a shrimp food truck- kind of random but you are in Hawaii :) :)

I probably get the shrimp scampi plate too, seeing as how I love garlic!
