aloha state of mind

"Aloha is a word in the Hawaiian language that has numerous meanings both as a single word and when used in context with other words. The most common uses are as a greeting, farewell or a salutation. Aloha is also commonly used to mean love. It can also be used to express compassion, regret or sympathy.  Aloha (and mahalo) are ineffable, indescribable, and undefinable with words alone; to be understood, they must be experienced. Deeper meaning and sacredness is hinted at by the root words of these words. Linguists differ in their opinions as to the exact meanings and origins, but this is what was told to me by my kupuna (elder): "On a spiritual level, aloha is an invocation of the Divine and mahalo is a Divine blessing. Both are acknowledgments of the Divinity that dwells within and without:  Aloha [Alo = presence, front, face] + [hā = breath] 'The presence of (Divine) Breath.'""

Jared and I had this little photo shoot at Aloha Tower about a year ago. The tower is one of my favorite landmarks on the island. The word "ALOHA" sits so boldly on it.

It's hard to describe aloha to someone who has never lived here. I definitely didn't understand or embrace the meaning of it at the beginning of our lives here. It's much more than a word. It's something that you can feel. The closest thing that I have to compare it to is southern hospitality, although nothing beats that of course. ;)

What about you? Is there some kind of spirit that your community embraces?

  10. I love that very first picture! Aloha...what a great word :-) It makes me smile everytime I hear it or say it. I of course don't hear it very often here in Texas, but I do try to say it whenever I can.
I do miss the "feeling" of aloha in Hawaii. I feel it differently here...I am hoping to teach the Hawaii feeling to my husband and my boys.
